Green Manure

“Learn from the past to live the present and dream of the future ”

The meaning of tradition

An extremely true quotation!

Oh yes, because if we talk about agriculture, we can’t exclude tradition. we can not work without considering the heritage of our ancestors.

Organic Agriculture. Heritage of the past.

So, ancient techniques experimented by our ancestors, to whom farming and cultivating has been a value and virtue, come back and turn current and present.

In organic agriculture, the dedication and the passion in the fields, in the rows, are a priority and are distinctive top obtain the quality and give to each operation in the cellar the shape of respect, healthiness, authenticity and genuineness.  These are only some of the many keywords for our philosophy , based on the desire to produce an excellent Franciacorta, which should be the most authentic representation of the peculiar features of this portion of Monte Orfano.

The Green Manure

The Green Manure is an ancient practice, used since centuries to improve the fertility of the land and to regrow the structure. It deals with seeding , between a row and the other, and making it grow high one or another types of grasses. Later, these ones are cut and mowed and then buried with the total green manure or left on the ground.

Green Manure.

Colza and Favino

At La Riccafana, we seed Colza and Favino in spring and autumn. It deals with two ancient types which are excellent replacement crops, in particular for the grapevine, with limited basic necessities, exploring the ground intercepting and absorbing nitrates.

Colza Seed

Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulfur are elements already present in the deeper layers of the soil. Thanks to the roots of rape and fable, these microelements are absorbed and penetrate into the tissues: leaves, stems and flowers. Following the overflow, the microelements move to the most superficial layers of the soil, concentrating on the first 20cm. This increases the organic fertilizers and the presence of life in the soil at the level of fauna and microbes.

They improve the structural and physical characteristics: the soil is softer, air-permeable and water-rich, humus-rich, protected by erosion. Ultimately, more fertile.
